Desiree Markham moved to Lubbock, TX to pursue her new career as the Health Educator at Texas Tech University. Two months later, she was accepted into the Mass Communications PhD program which she will begin pursuing in June.
Desiree was crowned Miss Hub City three weeks later and will be competing for Miss Texas USA in Houston, TX, August 31-September 2. Desiree moved to Lubbock from Texas’ neighbor, The Land of Enchantment.
Desiree received her Bachelor of Science in Communication with an emphasis in broadcast journalism and her Master of Arts in Communication from Eastern New Mexico University.
During her undergraduate career, she minored in Fine Arts and was active in the Music, Theater and Dance departments as well as a member of the KENW News 3 New Mexico news team. Desiree has experience as an extra in three feature films filmed in New Mexico and held a modeling contract with Victor’s International. Her hobbies include dancing, acting, swimming, reading, weight lifting, and researching health topics. Her platform as Miss Hub City is The Big O-Overfed and Obese, which focuses on the prevention and reversal of obesity related illnesses which contribute to the leading causes of death in the United States-heart disease, cancer, stroke, and diabetes. Desiree is passionate about working with the Lubbock community and representing Lubbock and Texas Tech University in Houston this fall.
Her journey has already began with her partnership with Eric Karr, a photographer in Lubbock. Eric is providing Desiree with her head-shot and photography needs for Miss Texas as well as sponsoring her with the scholarship fund donation. She loves working with Eric in the studio as he creates a fun and professional environment. “It is perfect to be sponsored by a photographer because you can capture the entire journey to Miss Texas.
I have always loved photography and I used to model for my mom when I was little, so this gives me the opportunity to fulfill my modeling dream,” Markham said. Capstone Cross-fit of Lubbock is sponsoring Desiree for her fitness needs as the swimwear competition at Miss Texas has become very competitive. Cross-fit offers a variety of classes and exercises designed to reach peak fitness. Currently, Desiree is making appearances in the community and hosting fundraising nights at Bahama Bucks, Chili’s, and Blue Sky.
